CTG Renewables, the new energy arm of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), said it has deployed drones to perform operation and maintenance tasks at its Qinghai Golmud photovoltaic (PV) power plant as part of its efforts to improve efficiency and cut costs.
Covering an area of over 24,000 mu (3,960 acres), Qinghai Golmud PV power plant is the largest PV project in China.
The drones are capable of carrying out tasks such as visual imaging, infrared thermal imaging and vegetation monitoring to detect abnormal conditions on PV components such as dirt, cracks, blocking and overheat, identify faulty parts accurately, perform timely troubleshooting, and thus improve the efficiency of power generation.
The use of drones helps reduce the cost of vehicles, headcount, fuel and other expenses associated with regular inspections.
