Operation of the Largest Thermal Power Plant in Tibet—Built with the Aid of China Huaneng Group
At 23:48 on January 28, 2010, the last unit of Lhasa Transitory Power Source Project for the power grid in central Tibet - a project aided by Huaneng - passed the 72-hour test run and was handed over to Tibet Power Corporation under the government of the Tibet Autonomous Region, marking the full completion of the project one month ahead of schedule, which was built by the Project Department of Luohuang Power Plant.
To address the power shortage of Tibet grid, NEA decided in July 2009 to 9 generation units totaling 100 MW in Lhasa and a unit of 10MW in Ali as transitory power source in response to the request of the government of Tibetan Autonomous Region, which would be built by China Huaneng Group and handed over to the government after completion.
Construction kicked off on September 11, 2009. On December 21, the first unit was put into operation. The 4 units in the first batch were put into operation on January 9, 2010 and can generate over 600,000KWh a day, effectively mitigating the serious power shortage in winter in Lhasa area.
