China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) won the “2019 China International Sustainable Infrastructure Award” for its Karot Hydropower Project in Pakistan at the Annual Industry Conference 2019 hosted by China International Contractors Association (CHINCA) from December 3 to 4, 2019.
The 720-MW Karot Hydropower Project, located on the Jhelum River in Pakistan, produces an average annual electricity of 3.2 billion kWh and is a priority project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative and a key project of the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI).
During an earlier visit to Pakistan, Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which is also the first hydropower project that was included in a joint statement between China and Pakistan.
At the award ceremony, CHINCA also held the theme forum “Sustainable Infrastructure—New Trends for ‘Belt & Road’ Infrastructure Connectivity” in which it issued 2019 China International Sustainable Infrastructure List.
The sustainable infrastructure award is aimed to help Chinese enterprises boost their awareness and capabilities in sustainable development as the global trend of sustainability is gaining traction.
