As of 4 am on Nov 15, the cumulative on-grid electricity of the five units in operation at Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) exceeded 100 TWh.
By replacing fossil energy with nuclear energy, the plant reduced coal consumption by 30.9 million tons and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 80.8 million tons, the equivalent of planting 225,000 hectares of forest.
Yangjiang NPP is a key energy project of the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) which adopts Chinese independent pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology –CPR1000 and its improved technology. The plant plans to build six gigawatt-level nuclear power units and is China's largest nuclear power project as measured by the number of one-time approved units.
Since construction commenced on Dec 16, 2008, the team has adhered to the basic principle of “Safety First, Quality Foremost, Pursuit of Excellence”. It maintains strict safety and quality standards in everything from civil construction to installation and commissioning.
The six units remained stable and checked all the boxes in terms of project construction, delivery and industrial safety. Units 2 and 3 had renewed the record of CPR series units’ optimum construction duration before Unit 4 was completed in a record time of 51.9 months.
Unit 5, China’s first independently-owned nuclear power unit to satisfy Gen-III nuclear technology safety standards, was put into commercial construction on July 12 this year. It realized the application of China’s first nuclear-grade DCS Platform with independent intellectual property rights - FirmSys - and once again renewed the optimum construction duration record.
Yangjiang NPP has achieved good safety performance and brought about sound economic benefits since these units began commercial operations. It was rated as a five-star enterprise by CGN for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017 and had 34 of the 48 World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) indicators reaching the world’s advanced level in 2017. Unit 1 set a record for best maiden cycle and ranked top among the 2017 CGN Star Units.
