Fangchenggang-1 in China's Guangxi autonomous region recorded first criticality at 2:17 pm October 13, marking that the unit officially enters the stage of on-load operation and taking a big step toward commercial operation.
Between October 7 and 11, China’s National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA) conducted a safety inspection at the unit. The inspection results demonstrated that the plant equips with well-established quality assurance systems for construction, commission and operation, comprehensive accident management and emergency preparedness procedures and effective fire prevention management process of nuclear island, and all the preparedness work before first criticality of Unit 1 had been in place.
On October 12, NNSA approved the criticality experiment of Unit 1 of Fangchenggang NPP, and the first criticality experiment was stared at 00:30 October 13 with total time of 13 hours and 47 minutes. After achieving criticality, zero power physics test for Unit 1 would be conducted so that to verify the core performance, the availability of nuclear I&C system and the correctness of fuel loading.
The unit would be connected to the electricity grid at the end of October and entered commercial operation at the end of December this year.
