On January 1, 2016, the first day of China’s 13th Five-Year Plan, CGN’s two large nuclear bases have made significant progress with Unit 1 of Fangchenggang and Unit 3 of Yangjiang NPP available for commercial operation, and began to count on the grid electricity after completing commissioning.
In the coming days, Fangchenggang and Yangjiang NPPs are required to apply for related electric power business licenses and other documents. Typically, after the required procedures finished, the date available for commercial operation are regarded as the commercial operation time.
Fangchenggang NPP, the first NPP in western region, is planned to construct 6 million-kilowatt PWRs. The PhaseⅠproject plans to build 2 PWR units with an installed capacity of 1080 MWe for each single unit and Phase II project to build two units ,i.e. the HPR1000 demonstration units (2*1180 MWe) with Chinese independent intellectual property rights. At present, all the activities of Unit 2 progress well and the construction of Unit 3 has already started on December 24, 2015. The construction of Fangchenggang Phase Ⅱproject, as the reference station of the UK, would lay critical foundation for China’s nuclear power “going global”. Meanwhile, with the adoption of HPR 1000 which is the main brand of “go global” for China’s nuclear power, Fanchenggang is expected to be the bridgehead for expanding international nuclear power market.
On November 12, 2008, the State Council approved Yangjiang NPP built 6 units with adoption of China’s indigenous improved million-kilowatt PWR nuclear power technology. The operation conditions of Unit 1, 2 of Yangjiang NPP, which were put into commercial operation on March 25, 2014 and June 5, 2015, respectively, are comprehensively sound with the safety and quality conditions stable and under control. The construction of Unit 3 was started in November 2010 and available for commercial operation on January 1, 2016. In addition, the safety and quality of the other three units of Yangjiang NPP are sound with the engineering construction, delivery and industry safety comprehensively stable and each indicator is in control state.
The electricity generation of Unit 1 of Fangchenggang is up to 24 GWh per day, meeting the electricity demands of a medium-sized city. It is scheduled that the power generation could reach 48 TWh following the commercial operation of all the 6 units in Yangjiang NPP, is equivalent to reduce the consumption of 15.6 million tons of standard coal, the emission reduction of 38.28 million tons of CO2, 370,000 tons of SO2 and 240,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, and corresponding to afforestation of 102,000 hectares.
Following the Unit 1 of Fangchenggang and Unit 3 of Yangjiang available for commercial condition, the number of units in operation in CGN has reached 16 with an installed capacity of 17.084 GWe and the number of units under construction in CGN reached 11 with an installed capacity of 13.464 GWe. CGN keeps being the largest nuclear power operator in China and the biggest nuclear power constructor in the world. At present, CGN owns 307,700 tons of uranium resources that could meet the refueling requirements of 30 million-kilowatt units for 30 years. In addition, with the collaborative development strategy of nuclear power and new energy, as the end of November 2015, CGN owns an installed capacity of 8.1 GWe of wind power, 1.1 GWe of solar energy photovoltaic, 5.26 GWe of hydropower equity installed capacity and 1.47 GWe of controlled operational installed capacity, and 8.66 GWe of natural gas. CGN also makes progress in the fields of distributed energy, nuclear technology application, energy-saving technology services and other sectors.
